Here's the most common Instagram caption written by a saree shop owner in India:
"Beautiful new Banarasi silk saree. Available in multiple colours. DM for price and availability."
Nothing wrong with it. But it doesn't sell.
The customers who see this post are already looking at the photo. They can see it's a saree. They can see it's silk. What they need from your caption is everything the photo can't show them — the price, the quantity, how to buy, and a reason to act right now.
Here's how to write captions that actually convert views into DMs.
The Formula That Works
Every high-performing caption from an Indian boutique follows some version of this structure:
[What it is] + [Why it's special] + [Price] + [Quantity/Urgency] + [How to buy] + [Location]
You don't need all six every time. But the more of these you include, the more your caption does the work of a salesperson.
Example — Before and After
Before (describes, doesn't sell): "Gorgeous hand-woven Kanjivaram saree in deep red with gold zari border. Perfect for weddings. DM for details."
After (sells): "Hand-woven Kanjivaram from Kanchipuram. Red with gold zari — the kind you hand down to your daughter. ₹18,500. Only 2 left. DM to check availability or come see it in person. 📍 Jayanagar, Bangalore"
The second caption answers the four questions every customer has:
- What is it exactly? ✓
- Why is it worth the price? ✓
- How much? ✓
- How do I get it? ✓
7 Caption Templates With Examples
Template 1: New Arrival
"[Product] just came in from [origin/city]. [One detail that makes it special]. ₹[price]. [Quantity available]. DM to see more or reserve yours. 📍 [Your location]"
Example: "Chanderi silk kurta sets just came in from Madhya Pradesh. Pure silk body, cotton lining — perfect for Bangalore weather. ₹3,800 per set. 6 pieces, 3 colours. DM to check which colours are left. 📍 Indiranagar"
Template 2: Craft and Process
"This [product] took [time] to make. [What makes the craft special]. [Price]. [How to buy]."
Example: "This blouse took our karigar 4 days. The gota patti work is all hand-stitched — no machine can do this. ₹4,200. DM if you want something similar made for your wedding."
Template 3: Urgency / Last Few
"Only [number] left of [product]. [Price]. If you've been thinking about it — this is the moment. DM before it's gone."
Example: "Only 1 piece left of this indigo Ajrakh saree. ₹6,500. If you've been waiting — DM now. This one won't come back in stock."
Template 4: Customer Story
"She came in for a blouse. Left with [what she actually bought]. [Warm detail]. Made and delivered in [timeframe]. DM if you want yours made in time for [occasion]."
Example: "She came in for a blouse alteration. Left with a custom anarkali for her daughter's reception. Delivered in 8 days — she cried when she saw it. DM if you want something made in time for wedding season."
Template 5: Festival or Season
"[Festival] is [days] days away. [Product] starting at ₹[price]. [What makes it perfect for the occasion]. DM to book before we fill up. 📍 [Location]"
Example: "Diwali is 18 days away. Silk kurta sets starting at ₹2,800. The kind your relatives will ask about. DM to book — we're taking limited orders this season. 📍 HSR Layout, Bangalore"
Template 6: Educational + Product
"How to [useful tip]. [2–3 lines of useful information]. PS: We have [product] in stock if you're looking. DM for details."
Example: "How to tell if a Kanjivaram is pure silk: burn a single thread — silk smells like burnt hair, synthetic smells like plastic. PS: All our Kanjivarams come with a certificate of authenticity. DM if you want to see the new stock."
Template 7: Behind the Scenes
"[What's happening in the photo/video]. [Why this moment matters]. DM if you want [outcome]."
Example: "Our karigar finishing the hand embroidery on a bridal lehenga. 11 days of work. She picks it up tomorrow. DM if you want your bridal outfit made with this level of care."
The Details That Make a Difference
Always include the price
The number one reason Indian boutique customers don't DM: they're afraid the price is out of their range. If you don't show the price, they assume the worst and scroll on.
Show the price. Always.
Location in every caption
Instagram is a local discovery tool. When you write "Koramangala, Bangalore" in your caption (not just the hashtag), local customers searching nearby can find you.
"DM to check availability" beats "DM for details"
"DM for details" could mean anything. "DM to check availability" implies there's limited stock and creates mild urgency.
Keep the first line strong
Instagram cuts off captions after 2–3 lines. The first sentence has to make them want to tap "more." Don't start with "Beautiful new..." — start with something specific.
Weak: "Beautiful new collection just arrived."
Strong: "This Banarasi took 3 weeks to weave. ₹7,500. Only 4 pieces."
What to Skip
Excessive emojis. One or two add warmth. A line of ✨🌸💫🥻🙏 looks like spam.
Long hashtag blocks in the caption itself. Put hashtags at the end or in a comment. They clutter the reading experience.
Asking for likes and follows. "Double tap if you love this! Follow for more!" — no customer has ever bought from a shop because they were asked to follow it. Put that energy into your caption.
Vague descriptions. "Stunning," "gorgeous," "beautiful" — these are filler. Replace with specifics: the fabric, the origin, the price, the technique.
Building a Caption Bank
Once you've written 7–10 captions that work, you have a bank to pull from. Rotate the templates. Change the product, price, and detail. The structure stays the same.
Keep a notes app or WhatsApp saved message with your 5 go-to caption templates. When it's time to post, you're filling in a form — not writing from scratch.
That's the difference between boutiques that post every day and boutiques that post once a week.
